The writer/comedian/actor Rory McGrath, famous for being a co-host on BBC1's comedy sports quiz They think it's all over and regularly appearing on BBC's Grumpy Old Men, remembers his favourite teacher well. He was called John Hampton Darling and the headmaster was desperate to get him in to the school, but JHD would only agree to come if he could teach German, a subject not offered at the school. Consequently, the head persuaded Rory McGrath to take German, and a system was worked out so that he could do German instead of rugby or cricket, two sports he hated. So he ended up in the unique situation of having one-to-one German tuition whilst the others were out playing rugby in the rain. Rory thought it was fantastic because JHD treated him like an adult. He learned so much in two years and felt it was like being at university or getting an elite education in his grammar school. He made German seem very lively and fun and Rory considered himself very lucky to be the only pupil in the class. The only minus point was that he couldn't get out of doing his homework as it would have been noticed!
